Diet, Foods May Contribute to Decreased Risk of Asbestosis

The resurgence of the old saying “eat your vegetables” may have merit among victims of mesothelioma cancer after a long lost study recently resurfaced. The findings of the study completed by a group from the Louisiana State University and National Cancer Institute (NCI) showed that individuals consuming certain healthy types of food were less likely to develop mesothelioma cancer even after exposure to asbestos. The report, which was compiled by a Diet and Mesothelioma taskforce, followed 116 individuals, half of whom had mesothelioma cancer and the other half had been exposed to asbestos but did not develop mesothelioma or other asbestos-related conditions. The two groups were relatively similar among tobacco use as well as income and level of asbestos exposure.According to news reports, the researchers studied the foods consumed by both groups and found the following to be true of dietary habits:* Individuals who remained cancer-free after exposure to asbestos were found to have eaten nearly twice the amount of locally/homegrown vegetables and fruits as those stricken with mesothelioma.* Victims of mesothelioma ate more “cake, candy and pie than those who stayed cancer-free.”* Those consuming what are known as cruciferous vegetables - such as mustard greens, collards, broccoli, turnip greens, cabbage […]

A Natural Alternative To Drugs For Pain Relief Is Herbal Turmeric

Turmeric is widely used as a spice in Indian and other South Asian cooking. It has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent of orange and ginger, and while it is best known as one of the ingredients used to make curry, it also gives ballpark mustard its bright yellow color. Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh. It is native to Indonesia and southern India, several parts of Asia, and Africa where it has been harvested for more than 5,000 years.
Turmeric has long been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory in both the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine. It is only in recent years that Western scientists have increasingly recognized the medicinal properties of turmeric. Growing evidence suggests that turmeric may afford protection against neurodegenerative diseases. The Benefits Of Taking Milk Thistle Extract

Milk thistle is a plant whose fruit and seeds have been used for more than 2,000 years as a treatment for disorders of the liver, bile ducts, and gallbladder. Milk thistle is also called holy thistle, Marian thistle, and Mary thistle is indigenous to the Southern regions of Europe however today it can be found growing around the world. This herb has a long therapeutic history.
Silymarin has been identified as the active ingredient in milk thistle which gives it its therapeutic properties. Silymarin is a naturally occurring polyphenolic antioxidant flavonoid. This active ingredient is only soluble in alcohol and not water, thus making an alcohol extract the preferred medium of extraction. Silymarin contains 4 compounds: silybin (the most active), isosilybin, silychristin, and silydianin.
Silymarin has been studied extensively around the world. Today, several scientific studies suggest that active substances in milk thistle (particularly silymarin) protect the liver from damage caused by viruses, toxins, alcohol, and certain drugs such as acetaminophen (a common over the counter medication used for headaches and pain; acetaminophen, also called paracetamol), can cause liver damage if taken in large quantities or by people who drink alcohol regularly.
